About Sigma Rockets
The importance of rocketry
"....model rocketry historically has proven to be a very safe hobby and has been credited as the most significant source of inspiration for children who eventually become scientists and engineers."
- Wikipedia
Great steps forward in the field of rocketry during the 20th century saw mankind land on the moon and send space craft outside of our own solar system. Those that remembered the early days of the space race and the rockets that propelled it went on to build some of the great technologies we enjoy today.
The history of model rocketry
In response to the increasing interest in rockets during the height of the space race the model rocket motor was invented by Orville Carlisle, a licensed pyrotechnics expert, and his brother Robert, a model airplane enthusiast. After reading a Popular Mechanics article on the safety of rocketry written by G. Harry Stine, they sent Mr. Stine samples of their invention. Mr. Stine, a range safety officer at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, then devised a safety handbook for model rocketry based on his experience at the range. The model rocketry hobby was born.
Since that time new rocket motors were developed and sizes got bigger. A new hobby known as High Powered Rocketry came from the more powerful motors. Today one is presented with many options in the field of rocketry. One may start off with models and work their way up to the larger and more powerful high powered rockets. As well various types of recovery options exist including parachute, streamer and glider recovery.
